Librarian to Go - Starts September 17th

I'll be offering "office/hallway" hours in Rockwell Hall South Foyer again this semester on Wednesdays from 1-3 p.m. starting on September 17th. This is a good opportunity for students to get some library reference/research assistance without having to schlepp over to the library. Pop by and say hello.

If you can't make it then, I am also available at 148 Morgan Library during the week M-F. Usually, I'm in my office from 8-5, although it's a good idea to check if I'm around before popping by (I have numerous meetings and other commitments). You can reach me by email at Louise.Feldmann@Colostate.edu, phone 491-4262, or IM (Yahoo, Google, Aim): louisebizlib.

Please don't hesitate to contact me for your library reference/research needs.

Business Source Premier - interface change

Welcome Back!

As you begin the fall semester, please note that the interface for Business Source Premier has changed. The new version provides added functionality, such as the ability to share folders and to search several databases at once. Also, it is now much easier to create citations. I think, overall, while the page is a bit busy, it is a much more intuitive interface.

Take a look at:

Let me know if you have any questions. Enjoy the long weekend!

Cool Tools for School

This summer I've come across several free tools that may be helpful, if not just plain fun, in organizing information and in teaching. Some of these were mentioned at the ALA conference in June and some at the COLTT conference in Boulder last week. Each of these is a free resource.

  • Jing
  • To create quick tutorials. Very easy to use. Great for explaining something via email rather than a long-winded written explanation. Here's one I created http://screencast.com/t/wWBdOA5Qw

  • bubbl.us

  • Mindmapping software. If you're more of a spatial rather than linear planner, this is the tool for you. Great for organizing information and brainstorming. Files can be shared.

  • D.volver

  • Just plain fun for creating quick movies. Perhaps useful for explaining concepts.

  • Google Maps

  • Create mashups. Can link with YouTube videos, webpages, etc.

Enjoy the last few days of summer break!

Google "Insights for Search"

Google has just introduced a new tool called "Insights for Search" which allows one to track the popularity of search terms by geographic region, category, and time frames. This free tool is intended for marketers, but others may find it useful as well. Check it out at:

Article about this appearing in the New York Times today "Google's New Tool is Meant for Marketers"

Wind Energy Industry Resources

I recently assisted the FCPL business librarian in compiling a report of wind industry resources. Here are some great resources on this industry. Most of these resources are from government agencies and other organizations. I highly recommend the Global Wind 2007 Report from the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) for an excellent overview of the current status of wind power around the world.

St. Louis Fed Updates - Center for Economic Digitization, etc.

The St. Louis Fed has recently announced their new Center for Economic Digitization.
http://stlouisfed.org/news/releases/2008/07_03_08a.html."To date, CEDD has digitized more than 300,000 pages of published material and archival collections from the Federal Reserve System and selected partners—currently, the Brookings Institution, the Government Printing Office and the Missouri Historical Society. This storehouse of documents includes U.S. government publications, Federal Reserve publications, photographs, manuscripts, and multimedia formats." All documents are available for public use and are available on the St. Louis Fed's FRASER (Federal Reserve Archival System for Economic Research) website at http://fraser.stlouisfed.org.

Also...the St. Louis Fed has published their May Liber8 newsletter titled "The Economics of War." It is available at http://liber8.stlouisfed.org/newsletter/. This provides a good overview of the issues and difficulties involved in determining the costs of war, including opportunity costs. The article provides a list of resources for further research. While geared for librarians these brief newletter articles always provide a good for an overview of a topic and are useful to researchers and students as well.

2007 Journal Citation Reports Now Available

The 2007 updated version of Journal Citation Reports from ISI Web of Knowledge (Web of Science) is now available. In the past, the Libraries provided a direct link to this via our databases page. Now access is available only via our Web of Science access point.

To find: Go to the Libraries Research Database page http://lib.colostate.edu/databases/ and click on the link to Web of Science. Once in Web of Science, go to the "select a database" tab (yellow tab near top of page). The link to Journal Citation Reports is available on this next page.

Journal Citation Reports offer journal performance metrics that statistically analyze citation data and help to determine the journal's impact and influence in the global research community.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
