It consists of the CLASSIFICATION NUMBER, the CUTTER NUMBER, and may include other identifying symbols. It is found on the spine or front cover of the publication and on the page following the title page. The CUTTER NUMBER is part of the call number, taken from a special list and used as an author number to maintain an alphabetical author arrangement of books on the shelves for each classification number. The call numbers used at CSUL include LIBRARY OF CONGRESS CLASSIFICATION, DEWEY DECIMAL CLASSIFICATION, SUPERINTENDENT OF DOCUMENTS CLASSIFICATION, and COLORADO DOCUMENTS CLASSIFICATION.CAMPUS MAIL Internal mail delivery and routing system. CITATION A citation contains information that identifies a specific journal article. Citation information is given in journal index records. A typical citation includes the following pieces of information: Article Title, Author Name(s), Journal Name, Volume Number, Issue Number, Publication Date, Page(s). CLAIM 1. Reminder to a publisher to send an item ordered, which is due, but which has not been received.CLASSIFICATION NUMBER Number assigned to a book or other library material to show the subject area. The Libraries use LIBRARY OF CONGRESS classification for books and periodicals in the regular collection, and SUDOC (SUPERINTENDENT OF DOCUMENTS) Classification for GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS. See also CALL NUMBER.CLASSIFICATION SCHEDULES Printed scheme, or outline, of a particular classification system. CSUL follows the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS CLASSIFICATION schedules. The schema by which a collection of items is organized or the method used to group materials by subject. CLASSIFIED PERSONNEL COUNCIL (CPC) Campus-wide elected group of employees who represent STATE CLASSIFIED personnel employed by the University.CLASSIFIED STAFF All permanent University employees not included in the academic faculty or administrative professional staff are in the state classified personnel system.CLOSED ENTRY Entry with complete bibliographical information covering all parts of a work. Usually refers to an entry for a SERIAL or set received in parts over a period of time which has been "closed" after receipt of the final volume.CLOSED STACKS Shelves of library materials which are not open to the patrons. Library staff must retrieve items for users. To examine a publication, whether bound or in the process of being bound, to see if the sections are complete and in the right sequence and to make sure that no maps, illustrations, etc., are missing.COLLATION Part of the CATALOG entry describing the publication by indicating the number of pages or volumes, illustrations, and size.COLLECTION Number of books or other items on one subject, or of one kind, or collected by one person or organization. Often used to denote the entire HOLDINGS of publications in all formats by a library.COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT The systematic development of the collection, which entails: 1. Selection/non-selection, 2. Located in MORGAN LIBRARY, Third Floor South.CUTTER NUMBER The Cutter number, or Cutter, is an alpha-numeric device for representing words or names by using one or more letters followed by one or more arabic numerals treated as decimal numbers. The combination of letters and numbers, called the Cutter, follows the LC classification number and is preceded by a decimal point. It is named for Charles Ammi Cutter, who developed several tables using letters and numbers to achieve an alphabetical arrangement. The Cutter enables alphabetic order to be maintained within a given class. Book numbers and some subdivisions in the classification schedules are types of Cutter numbers. Where double Cuttering is used, the second Cutter is sometimes known as the book or author number/Cutter, while the first is alternately the subject or class Cutter or, in the case of literature, the author Cutter.
